Steps to follow for admission to Medical Colleges in India 2023 -
- NEET UG Form filling - The first step is to fill up the NEET form. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is responsible for releasing the NEET UG application form and conducting the NEET UG exam in various states across India. The NTA is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The NEET UG application form is released by the NTA on the official NEET website, and aspiring candidates can fill out and submit the form within the specified dates. - Qualify NEET Exam: The next step is to appear for and qualify for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

How Many Questions Are in the NEET Exam (Explanation)?
In the NEET exam, there are a total of 200 questions. The exam contains questions from four subjects, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. There are two sections for each subject, Section A and Section B. Section A contains 35 questions, while Section B contains 15 questions, making a total of 50 questions.
Moreover, Candidates have the option to attempt any 10 out of the 15 questions in Section B of each subject in the NEET exam. This means that the total number of questions to be attempted remains the same, which is 180 questions in total for all subjects. The percentage required for admission to government Medical College is 50 percentile for any general-category student and 45 for SC/ST students.
NEET UG Counseling Process
After the declaration of the NEET UG result, candidates have two options for counselling, the Centralized Counseling Process, and the State Counseling Process.
The basic differences between these two boards are the participation of colleges.
- Centralized Counseling Process: Centralized counseling process is conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) for 15% AIQ (All India Quota) seats, 100% Deemed Universtity, 100% AIIMS, 100% BHU, 100% JIPMER (Internal and open seats), 85% DU and 85% VNMC and RML.
This process is applicable for All India Quota seats in government medical colleges across different states. Candidates can register, fill in their choices of colleges and courses, and participate in the counseling process through the MCC website.
- State Counseling Process: The second option is to participate in the counseling process conducted by the respective state counseling authorities. Where do you have the option of participating for the 85% of seats in the government college and 100% of seats in the private medical colleges.
During the NEET state counseling process, 85% of the government medical college seats are exclusively reserved for domiciled students of the respective state. These students are eligible to participate in the counseling. However, when it comes to the remaining 100% of seats in private medical colleges, each state has its own regulations for seat sharing. Out of the 17 states, some offer seats to students from other states, while the rest of the states in India do not allow admission for students from outside their own state.
The basic difference between these 2 bodies is their participation in the NEET UG counseling process. In the state counseling process for NEET, the eligibility criteria of state domicile are applicable for 85% of the government seats.
On the other hand, for the remaining 15% of the seats known as the All India Quota (AIQ) seats, there is no domicile condition applied.
2023 NEET UG Update
- In MCC and State Counseling Process, if you get allotted a seat in the 2nd round of the counseling process and if you do the report to the respective college, then in that condition you opt-out from the further counseling process.
- If you have been allotted a seat in your own state or in another state and you have reported to the allotted college, then you will not be able to participate in the NCC counseling or counseling of any other state.
- Once you have reported and confirmed your admission, you are considered to have accepted the seat, and this typically excludes you from participating in any further counseling processes.
