1. Language barrier in daily life and clinical settings: Even if your courses are in English, many patients will still speak Vietnamese. So, it's important to start learning the language yourself so you can talk to patients on the wards, understand local medical practices, and make them feel comfortable. Universities usually offer Vietnamese classes, but it's up to you to put in the practice.
2. Variable global reputation: Vietnamese schools are getting better fast, but they're not quite as well-known worldwide as the older medical schools in Europe or North America. So, if you really want to do a residency in the US, UK, or Australia, you'll need great scores on those licensing exams (like the USMLE, PLAB, or NExT). You’ll also probably need to get some extra hands-on experience.
3. Bureaucracy & paperwork: Getting your student visa, NMC equivalence certificate, and all the paperwork sorted can take a while. So, double-check that all your documents are correct and officially certified. Start planning your visa and arrival stuff way ahead of time.
4. FMGE / NExT challenge for India returnees: So, if you’re thinking about practicing medicine in India after you graduate, remember you’ll have to pass a licensing exam (either FMGE or NExT). A lot of students find these tests tough, so having a solid study plan is super important.
5. Distance from family & exam: style differences: Exam season can be rough because everyone deals with stress differently. The way people study, how tests are set up, and how grading works can vary a lot. It is better to tweak what you expect and find new ways to study that work for you.
