Why Choose Pondicherry for MBBS?
Puducherry is considered an open state for MBBS admissions, making it an attractive destination for NEET-qualified candidates from across India. Students from other states can apply for management quota seats in private medical colleges through the CENTAC (Centralised Admission Committee) counselling process without requiring a Puducherry domicile.
For government medical colleges, the admission process is divided between MCC and CENTAC. In general, 15% of government MBBS seats are filled through the All India Quota (AIQ) conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), while the remaining 85% State Quota seats are allotted through CENTAC and are primarily reserved for candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria prescribed by the Puducherry Government, including domicile requirements.
Admissions to deemed medical universities located in Puducherry are conducted entirely through MCC, which fills 100% of the MBBS seats under centralized counselling based on NEET UG ranks.
There is, however, one important exception—Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). Since JIPMER is a Central Government institution, all MBBS seats, including those that would ordinarily fall under the 15% All India Quota and the 85% institutional quota, are allotted exclusively through MCC counselling. CENTAC has no role in the admission process for JIPMER.
